A fractured heat exchanger is a critical safety issue that can contaminate household air with carbon monoxide. Key warning signs include persistent soot streaks around the burner doors, a pungent chemical smell resembling formaldehyde, burner flames that flicker or burn yellow rather than steady blue, and unexplained headaches among household members. We use fiber-optic inspection cameras in Lake Roberts, New Mexico to check internal heat exchanger integrity.

During warm summer months, ambient dust settles onto the furnace burners and heat exchanger surfaces. During the first cold snap, this thin layer of dust burns off, producing a mild, transient burning odor that typically disappears within 30 to 45 minutes. If the smell persists, smells of burning plastic/wiring, or produces visible smoke, shut down the system and call (877) 719-1221 immediately.

This symptom is known as short-cycling. The most common culprit is a severely restricted airflow caused by a clogged furnace filter, which traps intense heat inside the cabinet and trips the high-temperature safety switch. Other potential causes include a malfunctioning draft inducer fan, an oversized unit, or a blocked chimney flue exhaust. Our Lake Roberts, New Mexico technicians can calibrate and clear the system safely.

As an industry rule of thumb, if your furnace is under 12 years old and the estimated repair expense is less than 50% of the cost of a replacement system, professional repair is generally the most economical choice. However, if your unit has a compromised heat exchanger or requires chronic seasonal fixes, our Lake Roberts, New Mexico team will provide an unbiased, pressure-free evaluation of your options.

Yes, Local Furnace Repair Pro backs every heating repair with a comprehensive warranty on all installed replacement parts and labor.
